Week Two: I Am the Light of the World
Read: John 8:12–20
“Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
1. Opening Prayer
Ask God to expose areas of hidden darkness and bring His light.
2. Context & Teaching Notes
Spoken during the Feast of Tabernacles (massive lamp-lighting ceremony).
Light symbolizes God’s presence (pillar of fire).
Following = walking behind, apprenticing.
3. Discussion Questions
Where do you see darkness in our culture? In your own life?
What does it mean to “follow” rather than merely admire Jesus?
Why do people resist light?
How does walking in the light change our daily decisions?
4. Formation Practice
Evening Examen (Ignatian-style):
Imaginative prayer, often called Ignatian contemplation, is a 16th-century spiritual practice where you use your senses and imagination to enter a scripture scene, interacting with Jesus and characters to experience the Gospel personally. It moves scripture from the head to the heart, deepening emotional, personal connections with God. This practice is found on the website under Practices.
5. Closing Prayer
Light of the world, expose what needs healing and guide our steps in Your truth.
